The surface of the octagonal sai provides a sturdier grip and is often used for heavy impact and weapons training, allowing for better trapping. For demonstrations, many Martial Artists select a round chrome sai. The sai is very effective when trapping swords and other weapons between its prongs; it can be used to actually snap a sword blade.
