A
tanto is a traditional Japanese sword, that is used as a knife, and is the shortest of two similar
swords - the wakizashi and the katana. Originally designed to pierce armour, the primary purpose of the tanto was to act as a stabbing weapon, with the edge of the sword also ideal for slashing when in combat. Tantos are usually constructed in hira-zukuri style, meaning that the sides have no ridge line and are almost flat; unlike the structure of a
katana. Over the years, the design has evolved to become more ornate.
